Hydrothermal Vent
This project is a conceptual garment created for a student-led fashion show themed Under the Sea, inspired by hydrothermal vents and their role in the origins of life. Designed as an A-line, princess-seam gown reminiscent of a wedding dress, the piece symbolizes new beginnings and life emerging from the ocean floor, with a floor-grazing hem reinforcing its connection to the sea. The vibrant color palette intentionally contrasts the darkness of deep-sea environments to emphasize unseen life and energy beneath the surface. Constructed from canvas, the garment incorporates heavy applications of paint and caulk, referencing abstract expressionist techniques to form asymmetrical vent-like textures that conceal seams and enhance visual flow. Despite sustainability challenges, the design served as an artistic and technical exploration, successfully pushing the boundaries of traditional garment construction through innovative materials and surface design.
